2010 - Captain Blackboot's Island & Last Panto in Little Grimley

Review by Jill Lawrie

Director Viv Culton together with the Lavant Players, which boasts some two dozen youngsters, presented a spirited double bill at their local village hall.  Up first was 'Captain Blackboot's Island' by Patricia Wood allowing plenty of scope for a variety of roles.  This lively show is set on a desert island where the gallant Captain, in an attempt to attract treasure seekers, has produced a treasure trail.  When real treasure is found a grand battle ensues, but who will triumph against the Wicked Pirates?....

Captain Blackboot's Island & Last Panto in Little Grimley

Following the interval was the hilarious farce 'Last Panto in Little Grimley' by David Tristrum.  In contrast this one act play uses merely a cast of four, but to great effect.  The miniscule village am dram group discuss and subsequently rehearse their own take on a well-known pantomime which culminates in utter chaos on opening night!
Clive Cartey (Bernard) and Catherine Harper (Joyce) both give convincing and entertaining renditions as the groups technical and admin support, while Richard Ryder took on the demanding role of Gordon and Jenny Quest (Margaret) provided the glamour as the principal boy!
Despite a cold damp evening and a disappointingly depleted audience, this company produced a colourful amusing and light-hearted couple of hours.
